Day by Day

Itinerary

Day 01

Arrival in Ulaanbaatar

Your flight usually arrives at the new Chinggis Khaan International Airport around 5:00 a.m.

After meeting you, we will drive to your accommodation. There, you can get some rest; the time difference involved in flying east really throws your internal clock out of sync.
Around midday, we will pick you up and drive to the famous Chinggis Khaan Monument—an outing that will give you your first real sense of Mongolia’s vastness.

Afterward, we head back to Ulaanbaatar, straight to "the Hall"—our headquarters.
We’ll spend the rest of the afternoon there, enjoying some tasty finger food and introducing you to the entire team.
We will also familiarize you with your booked vehicles, help you pack your gear for the tour, and take care of any remaining preparations before tomorrow’s departure.

Once everything is ready, we’ll return to the hotel for a relaxed dinner—an occasion that, in our experience, usually sparks plenty of conversation.

Day 02

240 km

Baga Gazriin Chuluu

Your first night in Mongolia... perhaps you’ve already had the chance to admire the breathtaking starry sky.
After a hearty breakfast, we head back to the hangar... anticipation is mounting, as today marks the first day of driving.
We start by covering a fair distance on asphalt to head south, before turning off to begin our first off-road section.
Our destination for the day, Baga Gazriin Chuluu, is a stunning rock formation covering approximately 150 square kilometers; it first appears faintly on the horizon before gradually growing larger as we approach.
Here, we reach our first campsite, where we enjoy a wonderful opening day—and, even more so, that first fresh beer.

Day 03

220 km

White Stupa - Tsagaan Suvarga

A journey of approximately 220 km lies ahead, taking us through diverse landscapes.
Before leaving Baga Gazriin Chuluu, we visit the ruins of a monastery and hike to a vantage point offering a magnificent view of the massif.
We then set off, driving past striking rock formations until the vast steppe opens up before us. Today’s route takes us primarily across flat, open country, and the relaxed pace allows us to truly appreciate the expansive scenery.
After a stretch on paved road, we continue along scenic tracks to reach our destination for the day: Tsagaan Suvraga.
You will find yourselves settling into a rhythm on the loose terrain today, building on the solid training you received yesterday.
The beautiful hues of sunset and sunrise create unique lighting conditions that make this landscape so fascinating.
It is the next highlight of the tour.
Back at camp, we look forward to a hot shower and a cold drink...

Day 04

195 km

Dlandzadgad

Wir verlassen White Stupa, fahren zuerst durch leicht hügeliges Gelände, bis sich die Landschaft öffnet und die riesigen Weiten präsentiert.
Es geht heute nach Dalandzadgad. Doch bevor wir die Stadt erreichen, zum Schluß einige Kilometer wieder auf Asphalt, erscheint am Horizont ein riesiger Höhenzug.
Hinter diesem, keine 200 km entfernt, liegt bereits die Chinesische Grenze.

Am Fuße dieses Gebirgszuges liegt Dalanzadgad, die größte Stadt im Süden mit ca. 37.000 Einwohnern.
Sie wird auch "Das Tor zur Gobi" genannt, was aber nicht ganz richtig ist, denn inzwischen sind wir mitten drin.
Auf dem Foto seht Ihr das schöne große Tor am Eingang der Stadt.
Das Camp ist in der Nähe der Stadt, aber wir werden shoppen gehen, Souvenirs kaufen und es uns in einem der Cafe´s gutgehen lassen.
Entspannt verbringen wir den Rest des Tages, mit gutem Essen im Camp und angeregten Gesprächen, bei denen Ihr schnell feststellen werdet, daß Euch die Mongolei bereits in ihren Bann gezogen hat.

Day 05

195 km

Bayanzag - Flaming Cliffs

From Dalandzadgad, we head west.
We drive across a vast, expansive plain toward Bayanzag—the Flaming Cliffs.
A large mountain range runs alongside us on the left for a long stretch, until the terrain becomes gently rolling and we approach our next campsite.
The Flaming Cliffs are a massive sandstone formation featuring high, bizarrely shaped eroded ridges.
As the name suggests, they glow in shades ranging from bright orange to red in the light of the setting sun—an incredibly beautiful sight.

Day 06

220 km

Ongii Monastery

We leave the flaming hillsides behind, and our route once again takes us through vast steppes.
At times, you will feel as though you are at sea; for stretches of the journey, there is nothing to be seen around us... only endless open space.
Then, however, the hills—initially small specks on the horizon—grow ever larger as we drive through a smaller mountain range, home to Ongii Monastery, our next destination.
Founded in 1760, the monastery was completely destroyed under Stalin in the late 1930s; after 1990, the slow process of restoring this site—sacred to Buddhists—began, and the first small temple was rebuilt in 2004.
The entire complex is situated in a beautiful valley traversed by the Ongiin Gol River. Our camp is located right here, allowing you to explore the old monastery grounds and the river valley on foot in just a few minutes.

Day 07

150 km

Arwaicheer

We are once again heading north, setting off from Ongii Monastery after a delicious breakfast.
We first drive through a small mountain range before reaching more open terrain.
Our destination for the day is the town of Arvaikheer; with a population of around 30,000, it ranks among the country's larger towns.
We check into a hotel—having earned a bit of extra comfort—settle into our rooms, and look forward to using the hotel's sauna.

Day 08

320 km

Orkhon Waterfall

Refreshed and ready to go, today we head into a landscape that looks completely different again.
Having previously driven through mountain ranges large and small, experienced vast steppes, and seen arid expanses with sparse vegetation, today we are heading to the Orkhon Waterfall.
The route takes us through the Orkhon Valley, a volcanic landscape that is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
It is highly unlikely that anyone seeing the photos you take here will associate them with Mongolia; instead, people will likely ask if you have been to Iceland.
Our campsite for the night is situated right in the middle of the valley, offering us fascinating views in every direction.

Day 09

180 km

Orkhon Waterfall

We aren't moving camp today; instead, we’re staying at the campsite by the waterfall all day long.
We’re taking short excursions—with and without the scooter—and, of course, visiting the waterfall itself; you can climb down and take a refreshing dip in the clear water.
This day of rest, with its leisurely little outings, is doing us good, giving both body and mind time to recover.

Day 10

200 km

Ugii Lake

The route slowly leads us back towards Ulaanbaatar and straight to Ugii Lake, a freshwater lake teeming with birdlife.
First, we make our way out of the Orkhon Valley—a relatively easy stretch through a landscape still defined by its volcanic origins—before the terrain opens up again.
We stop for lunch in Kharkhorin and visit the Erdene Zuu Monastery.

Afterward, we continue to Ugii Lake and our next camp; here, you can enjoy swimming, sunbathing, and fishing.

Day 11

260 km

Elsen Taserkhai Sanddünen "Mini Gobi"

As the final days approach, the riding becomes more relaxed—partly because your routine for handling loose terrain has become much better and more intuitive; after all, you have already covered a great many kilometers on largely unpaved tracks.
You’ve encountered it all: loose gravel, hard-packed ground, pebbles, and scree.
Today, we ride to the region known as "Mini Gobi," where a fascinating mix of steppe, small forests, mountains, and golden sand dunes can all be seen in one place.
We set up camp, and anyone interested can then have some fun riding in the sand.
This is our final evening on the road; tomorrow, we head back to Ulaanbaatar.
We look back on a fantastic time filled with memorable experiences, and the conversations this evening are extensive and deeply engaging.

Day 12

100 km

Back to Ulaanbaatar

The final day of riding—there’s no turning back now.
There’s no way around it: the tour is nearly over, and we have to head back to Ulaanbaatar.
We’ll be riding mostly on tarmac today; it’s a more relaxed pace, and we do need to make our way back, after all.
Naturally, we’ll take a long lunch break along the way, arriving back at our depot in the afternoon.
A welcoming committee awaits us here at headquarters.
After parking the bikes, patting ourselves on the back for the ride, and grabbing a cold beer, we sit down together at a laid table—grins on our faces—to enjoy some food and drink. There is so much to talk about, and memories come flooding back.
We have a few more surprises in store for you here before taking you back to your accommodation.
There’s plenty more to discuss at the bar there, too, before you finally head to bed, tired but happy.

Day 13

Farewell Party

It is the final morning before the flight—it feels strange and unfamiliar not to have to put on motorcycle gear, a helmet, or gloves... just light shoes and a T-shirt.
Today offers a chance to stroll through the city, visit the impressive Genghis Khan Museum with its gilded statue, pick up a souvenir, or buy a fine cashmere piece for a loved one back home.
The day is yours to spend as you please; we can accompany anyone who wishes to explore the city. Later, we will meet for a traditional theater performance that offers a glimpse into ancient Mongolian culture, followed by a relaxed farewell party at the restaurant near your accommodation to wrap up the final evening.
Before the trip, everything seemed to stretch out ahead—the anticipation and curiosity, then the opening days, with the end feeling so far off. And suddenly, here we are sitting together: your luggage for tomorrow's flight is packed, and your wonderful time in Mongolia has come to an end.
You will remember this vacation for a long time—you will never forget it. You will recall this fantastic country with its incredible landscapes and the people whose hospitality earned them a special place in your hearts.
Perhaps you will even return; you certainly wouldn't be the first to visit us again ;-)

Day 14

Departure - Return flight

Upon waking, it’s clear: today, it is irrevocably over.
We’re picking you up early and taking you to the airport. We’ve spent two weeks together, and now our paths are parting.
It’s a mix of emotions—sadness that it’s over, but also the joy of seeing your loved ones back home again.
They are already waiting for you and your stories.
One last wave as you go through security, then a final farewell—it was a fantastic time; we really enjoyed having you with us!
