This 14-day enduro motorcycle tour takes you from Ulaanbaatar deep into the Gobi and further through some of Mongolia's most impressive landscapes – from rock formations, gorges, and singing dunes to the Orkhon Valley and Orkhon Waterfall. Along the way, participants can expect off-road sections, cultural highlights, overnight stays in ger camps and hotels, as well as visits to natural and historical sites like Tsagaan Suvraga, Bayanzag, Lake Ugii, and Khustai National Park, and much more. After we pick you up from the airport and take you to the hotel, you can rest a little.

After that, we’ll head to the Genghis Khan Monument.
We’re visiting this because you can climb all the way up to the head, have lunch nearby, and then drive to Terelj.
This is a place with a special rock formation, a popular destination for the residents of Ulaanbaatar, as it’s easy to reach in about an hour.
A Buddhist monastery is our next stop here.
After we’ve had a good look around, we’ll head back to the accommodation and enjoy a nice first evening together.

The hearty breakfast will give you strength for the day.

We’re heading into the city to visit Sukhbaatar Square and take a little city stroll. Here, you’ll have the chance to admire exhibits at the Genghis Khan Museum, such as the statue of Genghis Khan covered with 7 kg of real gold (from Mongolian mines) and archaeological finds from the Hunnu/Xiongnu Empire and other dynasties.

In the afternoon, we’ll have the tour and vehicle briefing at our headquarters, and you’ll also meet the entire team that will be accompanying you on the tour. We’ll sit together comfortably and go over everything you need to know in detail. Afterwards, we’ll take you to your accommodation, where you can prepare your luggage and gear for tomorrow, the first driving day.

The first day “on tour.”

We’ll be riding about 240 km today, starting with quite a stretch of asphalt to get used to the motorcycles and to calmly enjoy the first impressions of the surrounding landscape.

After leaving the solid road, we head onto gravel and a bit of sand towards our daily destination.

There, we’ll find the rock formations of Baga Gazriin Chuluu. This roughly 300 sq km rock massif, which reaches nearly 1800 meters in height, impresses with its narrow gorges, springs, and rock formations. For the Mongols, it has been a spiritual place since Genghis Khan, where one can recharge. We’ll walk through this area for a bit and let the landscape sink in. That evening, we’ll spend the night at the first ger camp.

About 220 km lie ahead of us, taking us through varied landscapes. We leave Baga Gazriin Chuluu, drive past the beautiful rock formations, until the wide steppe appears before us again. Today we mostly ride through flat, open land, and the relaxed pace makes it possible to really enjoy the vastness. After that, we go over a bit of paved roads, then back onto nice trails until we reach our daily goal, Tsagaan Suvraga. By now, a certain routine on loose surfaces is already developing, since you already had a good training day yesterday.
Dungenee Valley 195 km

On the way to the next ger camp, the vastness of the Gobi unfolds once again, until suddenly a huge mountain range appears on the horizon.
At the foot of this mountain range lies Dalanzadgad, the largest town in the south with around 37,000 inhabitants. From here, it’s only about 200 km as the crow flies to the Chinese border.
The camp is in the town, which means we’ll go shopping, buy souvenirs, and relax in one of the cafes.
We’ll spend the rest of the day comfortably, enjoying good food at the camp and lively conversations, where you’ll quickly realize that Mongolia has already captivated you.
Tomorrow, the impressive Dungenee Gorge will be our first stop, so stay excited—let’s just say, you won’t have seen this coming.

We leave Dalandzadgad initially on asphalt, the mountain range is getting bigger and bigger, and we drive straight towards it. At a certain point, we turn left and enter the Vulture Gorge. It alone is already impressive, becoming narrower and more beautiful. Here, the track is sometimes challenging, but always rideable. Then we head into a side branch towards the Dungenee Gorge, into which we drive after a few exciting passages... we go through it almost to the end and take a break here to let what we've just experienced sink in. The ride to the dunes begins with leaving the Dungenee Gorge. Suddenly, it’s just over, and a small climb needs to be tackled. Already, the vastness opens up again, and soon a huge plain appears before us, where we ride towards Khongorin Els, the singing dunes.
We cross the Gobi, vast steppes, refuel in Bayandalai Soum, take a short break there, and end the day's journey at the famous and impressive Khongorin Els singing dunes.
Try climbing these sand dunes over 200 meters high… you'll need good fitness and a hydration pack ;-) but that makes the cold drink at the camp in the evening taste even better!
Bayanzag - Flaming Cliffs 150 km

Bayanzag - Flaming Cliffs

Once again, there’s top-notch off-road riding, about 150 km in total. Steppe, gorges, and tracks delight the heart of any enduro rider.
We’ll take a break in Bulgan Soum, and then reach the fascinating Flaming Cliffs. These are famous for a wonderful evening display of colors at sunset, which makes the rock formations glow fiery red… and we hope for a great sunset to experience the spectacle.
Arvaikheer 320 km

The longest day of our tour, which, however, doesn’t pose too big of a challenge thanks to the easy-to-ride trails.
On this day, we first ride through seemingly endless steppe until the landscape changes and becomes more hilly.
In this mountainous terrain, the ruins of Ongiin Khiid monastery are hidden, which we visit.
Almost completely destroyed in the 1920s, it is slowly being revived and partly operated as a monastery.
We refuel before continuing, then we head through the mountains again until the terrain becomes flatter and more open.
Then we reach Arvaikheer, the capital of Övörkhangai province.
After the dusty days and today’s long stage, there’s comfortable relaxation for body and mind in a nice hotel.
We’ve earned that ;-)
Orkhon Waterfall 180 km

Orkhon Waterfall

Today, Mongolia once again shows its incredible versatility; looking at the photos taken here, one could think they were taken in Iceland.
Before we reach the waterfall itself, the drive goes through the Orkhon Valley (a UNESCO World Heritage site), which is heavily shaped by volcanism.

The goal for the day is the Orkhon Waterfall, which also doesn’t fit the typical 'Mongolia' cliché. Depending on the dryness, it carries more or less water, and if you want, you can go down and take a refreshing dip in the water.
Ugii Lake 200 km

Slowly, the route takes us back towards Ulaanbaatar and directly to Lake Ugii, a freshwater lake with a rich bird population.
First, we leave the Orkhon Valley, which isn't too challenging, until the landscape opens up again and we can see farther.
A relatively relaxing day of driving until we reach the lake.
Here too, you can wonderfully unwind and refresh yourself with a swim in the lake.
Khustai National Park 260 km

Khustai National Park

The last days are beginning, it will be more relaxed in terms of driving. Today we’ll drive about 40 km off-road, then onto asphalt. So we’re rolling quite leisurely toward our next destination, our camp in Khustai National Park. Once we arrive at the ger camp, you wistfully realize that this is the last night on the trip in a camp – time has flown by. In this nature park lives the Tachi wild horses (Przewalski’s horses). Tomorrow morning we’ll watch the horses, as well as ibex and other animals that live here completely freely, without human influence. Morning observation isn’t mandatory, since you really have to get up early, or go there late in the evening. Plus, the animals don’t follow any visitor schedule… they live freely and come, or not… ;-) Of course, anyone who wants can just stay at the camp. Once we’re back at the camp in time for breakfast, have breakfast, rest a bit, and then after lunch, we’ll drive back to UB.
Back to Ulaanbaatar 100 km

Back to Ulaanbaatar

The last, calm, and short day of driving takes us mostly over dirt tracks, often with gravel and stones, but also a few sandy sections. Don’t worry, by now everyone is a pro, so nothing surprises anyone anymore.
Think back for a moment to your first experiences like this a few days ago, and you’ll be amazed at how much you’ve learned in that time.
We’ll drive along the foot of the Khustai Mountains, following the Tuul River toward Ulaanbaatar. Passing beautiful rock formations, mountains, and wide landscapes, we’ll drive partly on asphalt until we reach the capital again, where the tour ends.
We arrive at the headquarters. A set table awaits us, where we’ll spend some time eating and drinking with big smiles on our faces. There’s a lot to talk about, and more and more memories come back.
There are a few more surprises for you here before we take you back to your accommodations.

The last morning before the flight, now feeling unusual and a bit funny, not having to put on motorcycle gear, no helmet, no gloves... just light shoes and a T-shirt.
Today there’s still a chance to grab a souvenir during a stroll through the city, or to pick up a fine piece for your loved one at a typical Mongolian cashmere shop.

In the afternoon, we’ll visit a traditional theater that gives us a closer look at ancient Mongolian culture, and then wind down the last evening with a cozy farewell party.

For a long time, everything seems beforehand—the anticipation first, then the first days, the end so far away. And suddenly, we are sitting together, your luggage for tomorrow's flight is packed, and the beautiful time in Mongolia is over.
You will remember this vacation for a very long time, never forget it. The fantastic country with its incredible landscapes, with people who, through their hospitality, have grown a little bit close to your heart.
Maybe you'll come back, you wouldn't be the first to visit us again ;-).

Frequently asked questions

This tour is suitable for riders with basic to intermediate off-road experience. You should feel confident on gravel roads, trails and rough terrain.

For the tour, we use current adventure bikes. In July 26, we got brand new BMW F 900 GS, which are equipped with Touratech travel gear. This gives us high riding comfort for relaxed, long stages and maximum safety for the rider.

An international driving permit (IDP) along with your national motorcycle license is highly recommended, but it’s not strictly required in Mongolia.

Yes, accommodation with half board is included for all tour nights, unless stated otherwise. Depending on the route, hotels, guesthouses, ger camps, or local accommodations are used.

Since we mostly ride off-road, a full enduro protective gear is absolutely necessary. So suitable gloves, an enduro helmet, pants and jacket with protectors, and of course a sturdy enduro boot that secures your feet and joints well. Additionally, a hydration backpack to avoid dehydration.

This is a difficult topic that everyone has to decide for themselves. Take a look at the following link and discuss it with a doctor you trust. https://www.reisemed-experten.de/laender-informationen/mongolei Personally (Rainer), I only get a tetanus booster and have been visiting Mongolia for over 10 years without any issues. Common sense, like avoiding contact with animals showing strange behavior due to possible rabies, is the best precaution. But as I said, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer here, it’s an individual decision.
