Khongorin-Els: The Singing Dunes of the Gobi

Over 200 metres high, golden in the evening light, humming underfoot: the Khongorin-Els dunes are one of the most powerful moments of the entire Mongolia tour. What to expect – and why fitness here is no joke.

Khongorin-Els: more than just a dune

There are places in Mongolia that you expect – and are still not prepared for. Khongorin-Els is one of them. The largest sand dunes in Mongolia lie at the edge of the Gobi, set between dry desert floor and the foothills of the Mongolian Altai. The first time you see them from the track, you stop. You have to.

The dunes reach over 200 metres at their highest points. Their nickname: the Singing Dunes – because under the right conditions the sand produces a deep hum as it slides down the face, like a distant instrument.

Approaching on the track: what you see before you arrive

The approach to Khongorin-Els by track is an experience of its own. Over several kilometres you see the dunes glimmering in the distance – a golden strip on the horizon that slowly widens as you close in. The colour of the sand shifts with the light: pale in the morning, golden at midday, orange in the evening. Early morning and late afternoon are the best times.

The climb: fitness is not a joke

Walking up the dunes is more physically demanding than most people expect. Every step sinks deeper than the last. The sand gives way. The heat increases with elevation. Without good fitness you reach a third of the way; with solid conditioning you reach the ridge.

Important: bring your hydration pack. Climbing in Gobi heat requires continuous drinking – not large gulps but steady intake. Leaving the water bottle at camp is a decision you will regret halfway up.

The view from the ridge is why the climb is worth it. To the north the plain extends without limit; to the south the dune landscape rolls in wave after wave. No road, no house, no mast – only sand, wind and silence.

The singing dunes: when and why

The phenomenon is not guaranteed and not on demand. The sand sings when large amounts slide from the ridge – either by wind or when several people trigger a small avalanche simultaneously. The sound is deep, almost droning, and carries far. Once you hear it, you understand the name immediately.

Around the camp: camels, quiet, mountains

The ger camp at Khongorin-Els sits right at the edge of the dunes. Bactrian two-humped camels roam the area – they are native here and kept by nomadic families. Camel rides to the dune base are possible for those who want them.

In the evening the light on the dunes transforms completely within minutes. Shadows walk down the slopes, colour intensifies. One of the few moments where the phone automatically becomes a camera – whether you planned it or not.

Why Khongorin-Els deserves its own chapter

Khongorin-Els is not "a stop" on the Gobi crossing. It is one of the few places that leaves an impression entirely independent of the tour around it. Many participants name it afterwards as the moment they remember most strongly – not despite the exhaustion after the climb, but because of it.
