Two panniers, one motorcycle – that is your luggage space

On the Mongolia tour you ride with two side panniers: one at 31 litres and one at 38 litres. That is 69 litres combined for 14 days on the road. Sounds tight? It is – but it is enough if you pack correctly.

All other luggage – large suitcases, extra bags, gear you do not need on the bike – stays at your base accommodation. What goes on the motorcycle has to fit properly. This article explains how.

Why weight on the motorcycle matters so much

Heavy panniers significantly change how an enduro handles on loose terrain. In sand, on gravel and on narrow tracks the bike responds more sluggishly, straight-line stability increases but manoeuvrability drops. Every unnecessary kilogram costs riding enjoyment and increases fatigue on long days.

Rule of thumb: fill the panniers no more than three-quarters full and distribute weight evenly between both sides.

What goes in the panniers – and what does not

Pannier contents: the essentials

What does not go in the panniers

The hydration pack as your third luggage unit

Everything you need during the riding day belongs in your hydration pack, not in the side panniers: snacks, sunscreen, a light rain layer, camera, spare glasses, a small knife. The pack stays on your back while riding – you have direct access without stopping and opening panniers.

A hydration pack of 8–15 litres is ideal. More than 15 litres becomes a problem on your back in the heat.

How to pack clothing: rolling saves 30 % volume

Instead of folding: roll each item tightly and stand them upright in the pannier. In practice this saves around 30 % volume and prevents everything from getting jumbled after the first riding day. Packing cubes by category help with organisation: one for clothing, one for tech, one for toiletries.

What stays at base

Not everything you bring on the trip needs to go on the motorcycle. For items you only need in Ulaanbaatar – city clothes, a second pair of shoes, a large suitcase – there is the option to leave luggage at the base accommodation. The tour team clarifies the details during the briefing.
